What happened when your family found out you were into anime?

Oh god I don't even wanna talk about it. God when you just want to stay in your room, but your cousins which you barely relate to try and start up a conversation, because your parents asked them to talk to you, so like neither of you and your cousin want to be there, and why am I projecting in a run on sentence? Basically, they love talking about me, and anime is not something that you just give to random people. Like you can say shows, or Netflix, but not anime. Whatever, I just wanna stay in my room, and like, not leave.

Mine didn't care because I was young enough. But when they noticed I was still into anime in my 20s they thought I was a bit weird.

Mine have known I've liked it since I was 12....but they understand it's really not weird at all; seeing at how much it's blown up in the USA with people of all ages.

Honestly, they don't care about what kind of TV shows I watch or what books I read. That's pretty much all it boils down to.

People are makin a way bigger deal than it actually is.

anime is not something that you just give to random people. Like you can say shows, or Netflix, but not anime.

The heck? Why not? Why are they suddenly so "different"?

They don’t really care if I’m being honest. I’ve watched Pokemon, Digimon, Yugioh and Naruto when I was younger so there was no definite moment when they found out, to them it’s just a cartoon.

At first they were ok with that and nobody cared, after that they noticed that on those illegal sites I was watching were sometimes porn/hentai ads so they tried to make me stop watching anime and failed now nobody gives a f*ck again.

They do know that I watch/read a little bit, though not how much. They don't have a problem with me watching/reading stuff like Pokemon, and I managed to convince them that Mob Psycho 100 is actually good stuff, but my parents are definitely kind of skeptical about it.

"Oh god I don't even wanna talk about it."
proceeds to create a thread about it

Nothing really happened. Anime is just Japanese cartoons and a source of entertainment, of course there's always going to be weird stuff from time to time, but that's just like with other shows. My parents and family already knew what anime was cause my elder siblings watched it. They're fine with it.

They just see it as another phase, the same way my younger sister is into Stranger Things or whatever. My parents actually grew up watching some anime so we occasionally will talk about old shows and I can share some information about it with them (not that they care lol). They do wish I'd focus more on my studies though.

my parents are immigrants from Mexico so they legit didn’t even know what it was besides the fact they were cartoons so they were just confused why a teenager was still watching cartoons but they really didn’t give a fuck

"Found out"??? I'm sorry for being an asshole.. but I just laugh every time I see these threads.

My entire family loves anime. They loved anime since the 80s and 90s, before I was even born. Technically, they didn't "find out," because it's as normal as us watching a cartoon, television series or movie.

Obviously I don't just mean mainstream anime, either. You can probably tell that by the fact I said 80s and 90s.

I'm sorry for you all, who have families who disrespect you just because you enjoy anime, haha.

Nothing really. I watched anime ever since I was young. I remember how I tried to share my interest in anime with my grandfather when I was a kid. But anime never appealed to him.

It was actually my mother who found out my dad and I were into anime. When I was younger, my dad and I would watch anime whenever my mother wasn't around, needless to say, she walked in on us and my mother was less than pleased. We were watching something that had a good bit of violence so she gave my father an earful about letting me watch violent content at that age. As for me, she didn't do anything other than the stereotypical "don't watch that type of stuff," so I got off easy. Flashforward to a few years later and now they both watch anime together and even have their favorites, my dad's being Death Note and mom's being Hellsing Ultimate.

Well, let's see.

two of my sisters also watch anime so they're cool.

My other sister doesn't care and makes fun of me sometimes but I don't care.

And my parents think I'm watching Chinese cartoons and move on with their day. They only care if my grades drop which they dont

They thought One Piece was weird anime porn, and told me not to watch bad stuff. I almost got caught with loli doujins on my laptop, but I slammed it off in time since it froze. Man that was close. I told my mom I shut it to reset it since it would not turn on. Lol

They sat down with me and had the "talk". They talked to me, very calmly but sternly, that such a thing is not to be tolerated, that anime is the reason why our family legacy is the way it is. They told me they love me and because of that they wouldn't tell the authorities. But I know that was only a warning, not a loving gesture. Ever since then my dad would gives me weird looks and ask me looking down at his newspaper, "is everything...alright, son?" And every time my mother would look at me expectantly. I'd say "yeah" and not a single word is uttered during the whole meal.
It was tough being constantly under surveillance. One of those days I met an anime on the streets, it had been beaten and spat, I asked "Are you okay", the anime looked at me and said I shouldn't be talking to it, otherwise they would get me too. I shrugged and help it anyway. On the way home a van stopped by me, the door opened and three men came out and started to wail on me.
The next time I met that anime, it looked at me and let out a audible gasp and said "I knew it! It was all my fault". Honestly I was getting pissed at that point.
Jump forward a few months and I get from the table, look my parents in the eye and tell them "Mom, Simon, I'm love with an anime". At that my father roared at me to go to my room and starve and that he was living with a stranger, my let out a single tear without getting up. I left through the front door and never looked back. I found Anime and said to it "Let's go" it just nodded. We ran away.
It's been a few years and I cannot go back, and I haven't talked to my parents since that day. But I can say that I'm happily living with Anime for quite some time now. It's just hard to not look over your shoulders every day.
